CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY & SPECIAL EDUCATION

Genetic diseases affect not only the patients with diagnosed genetic condition or the carrier of the genetic trait but also parents, siblings, grand parents, spouses and the community in which the patient lives. Therefore it is important to be aware of all levels of stress associate with genetic disorders in order to help individuals and those close to them cope with the diagnosis or occurrence of a genetic disorder and with recurrent life stress which they may encounter.

Services include :

  • Psychological assessment and evaluation like intellectual and developmental assessments to those afflicted with genetic disorders.
  • Psychological counseling and guidance.
  • Functional, therapeutic and vocational assessments for the mentally handicapped with comprehensive special education.
  • Intervention to correct the deficits observed through assessments
  • Early intervention to children below 3 years age who have developmental delay.
  • Behaviour modification techniques to those with problem behaviours.

Psychological assessment was done for more than 8000 cases.
Early intervention was given to 120 children with delayed milestones.
Special Education Services were offered to more than 500 children with mental handicap

Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases (IGHGD), Hyderabad has established SECMH, Self Finance School in 1993, the Platinum Jubilee year of Osmania University, as an early intervention programme for children with delayed development disorders.

Genesis

The original idea to bring ”Special Education Centre for the Mentally Handicapped” (SECMH) into existence came from Dr. P. Usha Rani, Clinical Psychologist at the Institute with generous funding from sponsors from India and abroad with an idea to provide special education and training for the betterment of the mentally handicapped children.

Location

  • School premises provided by Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases Osmania University.

 Mission

  • To provide  training for the intellectual & physical development to offer  appropriate counseling and guidance
  • To provide early interventional therapy to children with developmental delay
  • To provide vocational training with comprehensive special education
  • To offer behavior modification, through physiotherapy, speech therapy, music therapy, yoga therapy etc.
  • To help children to lead an independent / less dependent life to overcome societal stigma and burden

Facilities & Faculty

  • Skilled/Unskilled dedicated teachers (all temporary and working virtually on honorary level).
  • Visiting consultants for speech therapy, physiotherapy, music, dance and pottery.

Accomplishments

Special educators impart training in the areas of personal, social, academic and occupational skills. Additionally, vocational training that include various skills such as making of file boards, candles, paper bags, envelopes, phenyl, glass painting and utilities out of waste material.

Limitations

  • Paucity of Funds
  1. No financial support is received from Osmania University. Hence, school is facing a financial crunch and is not well supported to improvise the skills of children
  2. Need to raise funds from philanthropists for seed finance and sustenance and maintenance of the school
  3. Necessary to increase the uptake of students which is being hampered due to paucity of funds
  4.  The present trainers receive minimum salaries for their services
  5. Well trained and skilled special educators need to be recruited for efficient training of the students

Social Responsibility and Utilization

  • To create a corpus fund for long term sustenance.
  • To offer subsidized/free service to those who cannot afford.
  • To start vocational centre with a long term rehabilitation process.
  • To grow further and serve many more with the same dedication.

Tax Exemption

Contribution can be made through cheque/DD in favour of “Special Education Centre for the Mentally Handicapped, Hyderabad” and is exempted from income tax under 80G (2(a)(iiif).For Further information please contact :
