Director’s Message

I welcome you to the Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic Diseases, established in the year 1978 as a premier Institute in the country to carry out multidisciplinary research in Genetic Disorders. India rated high in genetic diseases causing genetic burden and morbidity. Though significant progress has been carried out in diagnosis, management and treatment of the conditions, the advancement of technology further can mitigate the problem. The prime goals of the institute to detect Genetic Diseases in pre and post natal periods, delineate biochemical, molecular and chromosomal changes thereby applying genetic counseling strategies for better management and treatment of these diseases. So far, the Institute has offered services to more than two lakh cases and families afflicted with genetic disorders. As an extension service, the Institute also established a school for the children with Intellectual Developmental Disorders (IDDs). The institute has established genetic clinics in two major hospitals of the city: Govt. Maternity Hospital, Petlaburz and Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children, Hyderabad.

The institute takes the privilege of maintaining genetic registry since its inception. It harbours an excellent team that offers prospective and retrospective genetic counseling to the affected and their families. Institute of Genetics has pioneered ultrasound imaging in twin cities and presently  utilizes 3D/4D ultrasound scanning for detecting fetal anomalies at prenatal stages as per the guidelines of preconception prenatal diagnosis Act, 1994 (PCPNDT). In addition Triple Marker Screening, Florescent In-situ Hybridization (FISH) and Spectral Karyotyping (SKY) are being adopted for detecting chromosomal disorders. With these facilities, more than 5000 high risk pregnancies have been screened for Genetic Disorders and Congenital defects. Institute has launched new born screening for the predominant metabolic disorders like Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH) and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) and received 100% satisfactory report for the analysis from the Quality Assurance Cell, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta till date.

Institute of Genetics continues to forge collaborations with other institutes and hospitals for expanding its research and service activities. Till date 120 research scholars were awarded PhDs and more than 600 research papers have been published in peer reviewed National and International journals. The Institute is involved in training and imparting skills by organizing orientation programs, workshops and short term training courses along with certificate courses.

To bring awareness of genetic disorders and for early detection in rural areas, orientation program for medical officers of all primary health centers covering 10 districts of Telangana State under NRHM & RVM-SSA Scheme of Govt. of AP was organized along with NTR Health University. Several specialized health camps in rural areas (for tribal children, Zilla Parishad school children and adults), urban slums, old age homes and local government schools are also conducted regularly.

I wish the journey through the website provides information required.

Best Wishes for future endeavors.
